Making of digipak: FRONT COVER COMPLETED!

With the much needed advice of the teachers (Mary,Rebecca,Dan and Mickey) I have completed the front cover of my digipak. I tried to stay within our group theme and font and made sure it all flowed together well. Here it is!

Until then

digipak- advertisement- change of background

I decided to make some changes to my advertisement especially to the color of the background. I think the colour looks better in black rather than black.

Below is the work in progress.

Ciao!!!!

My front cover of my digipak so far

This is my first front cover i have done so far, i had to change the image because my previous one did not match the front cover as well as looking to small and just 'out there'. So i hope you like this one now as it fits perfectly on the front cover.

Making of digipak: Editing

I decided not to use the silhouette as it looked unprofessional and didn't make much sense, so I have decided to just use my face as the front cover, as though unconventional with other typical dubstep digipaks, I have looked at a FEMALE dubstep artist digipak (Katy B) and she has indeed used her face, so I will use her as inspiration for mine. Here is the front cover of the digipak above.

digipak- work in progress

So having started the background for my digipak and after having a meeting with my teacher today, I have changed my decision about my digipak. I found that I could do better than the trees idea. Seeing that I had another idea, which also goes well with my mockup. I have commenced work having changed my idea and below is the screen shot of my work in progress.

I will continue to work around it and make the best out of it.

Researching Ancillary products: Analysis of 3 digipaks

So we had a little change of plan..

We have all decided to use a sillouette of my face (Kehindes idea) as we think it will represent the singer more, even though our genre rarely uses the singers face in their digipaks. Above are the photos we plan to use. Hopefully this will produce an eye catching digipak!

Until then!

Researching ancillary products: Mock up of Digipak

To prepare myself for the real thing I have created a mock up on paper of how I would like my 4 fold out digipak to look. I think I will change the road idea to a picture of me if the road idea doesn't work out.

Until then!

Stephanie

Researching ancillary products: Review of past students work

Here is a student digipak that I liked, so I will do a review on it as I think that will help me increase my understanding of a digipak and its purpose.

I chose this digipak, not because it is the same genre as our one as it is clearly not, but because of how well they represent the artist and the genre. This is clearly a pop genre digipak as it uses bright eye-catching colours to draw the audience in to buy her music. I would say that it is aimed to a young female audience, as pink is the main colour and that has connotations of girlyness, along with the candy theme. This group does a good job of promoting her as an artist as they use her on 3 out of 4 pages out of the digipak. Overall, this is a good digipak and I plan to take on some techniques they have used, even though it is  different genre.

Until then!

Stephanie.

digipak- preparation- ideas

First
Firstly, looking at past student's works, I came across one whose background I admired. Below is screen shot of it.

It is very simple yet interesting. The background is that of trees and a cloudy sky which was taken in the evening or early morning. I intend to make use of something like this and perhaps mix it up with something, which brings me to my second idea.

Second
Nero's 'crush on you' album cover is my second idea.

The Diamond shape infront of it is quite an attention grabbing feature, this applies also to the silhoutte picture in the cover as well.

MIXTURE
Seeing that all the album covers I reviewed did not have a picture of the artist in it, instead they have graphic and striking images, I am thinking of using the trees and sky and the diamond shape as the background for all of my ancillary products. The silhouette will be limited to just the front cover. Hopefully I can take right pictures and everything works well. Most importantly, hope my teacher approves it.

Digipak- preparation- Dos and dont's

Do's

  • Use a clear font. It should be clear and visible from a distance. It must follow genre conventions.
  • Use clear photos that are in focus.
  • Use the correct size of picture to prevent the picture from being disfigured when trying to adjust it.
  • Use a layout that follows the rule of thirds for composition.
  • Use appropriate color for font, images and background.
  • Use appropriate industry logos, barcode, date, copyright, titles and artist name.

Dont's
  • Stretch images.
  • use unnecessary effects. All effects must suit the genre.
  • use layer styles.
  • Place text across artist's face.
  • Use a font because "I like it".
  • Feel you need a separate photo on every panel.

Researching Ancillary products: Analysis of 3 magazine advertisements

To further my research in ancillary products, here are three adverts related to my genre:

CHASE & STATUS

LAYOUT&CONTENT: The layout for this is quite 'in your face' as it isn't completely straight and it is rather bold and bright. The title is right at the top, drawing the audiences attention to the artists. It is quite jam packed with information - as it includes information about the tour dates which is also quite big. All the extra information is in the small print inside the flyer, which the consumer should read as the eye catching font should have made them look at it in the first place!

COLOUR&IMAGES: The main colours for this article are pink, blue, white and black which are quite bright and contrasting colours, which helps capture the audiences attention. There are no images, only text boxes and fonts.

FONT: They used a big blocky font, which kind of reminds me of the type of fonts they would use in a military film, it is strong yet has some patches missing to give it a real edge  - which is common in dubstep genres.

CHASE AND STATUS 2

LAYOUT&CONTENT:
This layout is very different to the poster I analysed before - the text is a contrasting colour to the black and white poster making it standout and grab the readers attention. It is also in the centre of the advert, in front of the photo. It has the basic content of an advert, stating the tour dates and esstential information such as the websites and download links etc, which is typical of any genre advert - to inform.

COLOUR&IMAGES: There is only really 3 colours; yellow and white for the text and the background which is a black and white portrait of a pug. This picture is quite random and weird which is common for a dubstep genre, as the images used to represent the genre are usually random and don't make sense, almost like a disjuncture of sorts.

FONT: The font for this advert seems to be Arial, it is quite an informal text. It is all in capitals to show the importance of what is being written.

MAGNETIC MAN

LAYOUT&CONTENT: This is an advert for Magnetic Man's debut album, which is different to the other advertisements as they were advertising tours. So instead of having tour dates on the advert they have reviews of the album from various music magazines etc, which helps marketing as it promotes the artist as having good music and merchandise. The way it's laid out with the silhouette of the artists in the middle gives them a mysterious, private vibe which is what many dubstep artists do - they hide themselves and let their music do the talking, An example of one that does this is Skrillex, he is rarely seen in his videos and advertising.

COLOUR&IMAGES: The main theme for this is black and white, with the text being white to stand out against the dark background. the only image here is a silhouette of magnetic man who appear to be a band instead of one person, which adds to their image.

FONT: The font seems to be a font the artists have made up, but it does look quite futurtistic and modern which is common for a dubstep genre.

Until then!

Stephanie

Researching Ancillary products: Analysis of 3 digipaks

To further my research in digipaks, I am going to analyse 3 digipaks from the dubstep genre, which is the genre we chose to do for our music video.

I could only find the front and the back cover of the 4 page digipak, so I will analyse those instead. It is quite a simple cover, with a black and white picture of a pitbull and the words Chase And Status over it in capitals in a bright, contrasting yellow colour. This is quite random, which could possible represent Chase and Statuses random nature in their appearance and music.

The front cover of Magnetic Mans digipak is quite plan, only having an odd silver object in the front in the shape of an M and their classic text for Magnetic Man, which represents the group as quite modern and gives a futuristic feel to it.

This Katy B digipak has a pretty feel to it, as the background which is a portrait of Katy B is tinted to a blue and purple colour which fades into each other. These colours are quite feminine and help represent as a dubstep genre due to the modern font of the text, but still broadening out into other genres as it is quite ambiguous the front cover.

Until then!

Stephanie
