Laura Mulvey

Laura Mulvey
1.     Briefly summarise what you understand about Laura Mulvey’s theory on representation;
First of all to answer this question we have to see what Laura Mulvey has actually said in relation to this. ‘’In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly’’.

From what I see from her statement I  understand that Mulvey’s theory on representation is that woman are portrayed to be seen as objects/accessories in which males tend to fantasise on. So therefore leading the world to have a imbalanced  view on male and female as males look at females in certain ways which is named as the ‘male gaze’  to give them a higher status over females.

2.     Find 2 videos that you feel illustrate your understanding and embed them into your blog, along with a short explanation.  First example would be a well known song by 50 Cent called 'Candy shop' this song shows a lot of Woman half naked and are used for 'presentation'. The part when the chocolate/syrup drops on the woman shows she is seen as something to 'eat', 'consume'. In addition when all the woman start dancing in certian ways to grab the males attention.  Furthermore the song title reinforces the idea of Woman being objects/accesrories as they are seen as candys/sweets.

    Second Example would be Nelly's song 'Ride with me' this song also shows a lot of Woman being used as objects as the way they are dressed which is half naked, the way they dance to seduce the male audience. Also the part when the woman is shown on a motobike it shows she is what males want. Just like males intend to want cars,bikes etc.. it shows she is used to make the motobike even more presentable then it already is.It then shows it again but this time the Woman inside the car with anouther scene where they are standing next to the car, also the part when some of them are in dirt. Especially since this video is censored it is obvious there are some words that show Woman as objects.
