Reflecting back on the As year: Lip sync Tutorials

At the start of the process of making the Digipak, the first lesson which was the lip sync tutorial was aimed at teaching students a very important skill for making a music video - Lip sync.
Using Final Cut Pro, the music video of a particular band was used as an example. We were told to listen to the song, lay the Base track first and bring down the various shots of the music video into the work area (in FCP), aligning the singer’s lip to the music playing.
For example, we picked a word from the lyrics e.g. “they”, then we have to watch the video of the various shots and get the same word and align it with the Base track.  Using the main song as the lead, we were told to follow the beat of the song and make a mark by tapping the letter M on the Keyboard. This is to ensure that variety of shots is used in the music video.
After making marks of the fourth beat (in the case of this song), we deleted some shots (excluding the base track) and left some to make sure that various shots will be appearing in the music video every fourth beat. The skill was quite easy to develop, as it only needed concentration and listening.
It was actually fun having to listen to the lyrics and beat of the song to get every fourth beat because not only was my head working, my feet and hands were tapping and I was almost dancing to the song. The hardest part of the lip sync in FCP is figuring out the beat, counting it and tapping the letter ”M” on the keyboard. In the first couple of tries, I was missing the beat and was getting confused but I later figured it out.
