Andrew Goodwins Theory (Research)

Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin believes that pop music videos are focused around the song and that they do not consist of traditional analyses. Pop videos uses the singer as narrators and character's and they look directly at the camera to try and involve the viewers at home. These point's show that music video use narratives differently compared to films and novels. Goodwin points out that there are three types of relations between song and video:
  • ILLUSTRATION
  • AMPLIFICATION
  • DISJUNCTURE
Illustration - This is when the video demonstrates and tells the story of the lyrics. A grate example I know is Ludacris's Run away love. The song talks about the issues of children having trouble at home and having to resort to running away from their situations. And in the video visualizes the lyrics and shows the viewer's what the artist is singing/rapping.

Amplification - This is when the video adds new meanings that do not go with the lyrics but they add layers of meaning.

Disjuncture - This is when the video has little to no connection to the lyrics or where the video contradicts the lyric. A good example I think is Beyonce single ladies the song is about women being single and telling their partners to put a ring on it but the music video has beyonce dancing in a leotard with a white back drop. Not that I'm Complaining) =P

Dance is used a lot in music videos to express the mood and feelings in the song. It also another way for the artist to show their skills to the viewer.
